About Grass Valley

Grass Valley, the largest city in Nevada County’s western region, is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills in historic Gold Country. The city offers gorgeous views of rocky hills and cedar trees. It’s a mere hour from the capital of California, Sacramento, and only three hours from San Francisco.

Grass Valley History

Formerly known as Boston Ravine and Centerville, Grass Valley was renamed for the literal grassy valley that originally attracted settlers and their livestock to the land after a post office was established there in 1851. Containing two of California’s richest mines, Empire Mine and North Star Mine, many early settlers of Grass Valley were tin miners, most originating from Cornwall, England. These settlers were skilled in the deep mining techniques used to mine tin which could also be used for mining gold. Still holding on to its Cornish heritage, Grass Valley celebrates annual events such as St. Piran’s Day and a Cornish Christmas celebration.
