About Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is located along the Nevada and California border. Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both California and Nevada and is home to a number of ski resorts, summer outdoor recreation and other attractions. The mountains and lake scenery attract sightseers year round.

Lake Tahoe History

The modern Lake Tahoe was formed by glaciers during the ice age nearly one million years ago. The surrounding area was first settled by Washoe Native Americans. In 1844, John C. Fremont discovered Lake Tahoe on an exploratory expedition. When gold was discovered in the South Fork of the American River in 1848, countless gold prospectors passed near the area on their way to the gold fields to the West. In 1858, European civilization found the Lake Tahoe basin with the discovery of a nearby silver deposit. From the mid 1850’s until around 1890, the area supplied timber for nearby mines and was logged extensively. During the early 20th century, only a few vacation homes existed around the lake. However, after World War II and the construction of casinos nearby, development greatly increased with the help of newly completed interstate links. In addition to this, the 1960 Winter Olympics held at Squaw Valley, resulted in a dramatic increase in development within the basin.
