About Loomis

Loomis is a quaint, family-oriented community located along Interstate 80 in Placer County. It retains its rural character and charm with its old fashioned downtown, large residential lots and custom homes, and its woodlands with rolling hillsides and natural streams. At the 2010 census, the population of the town was 6,430. Loomis’ citizens take pride in their small town and consider it like “a big family,” per the town motto, "A Small Town is like a Big Family."

Loomis History

The town of Loomis has changed names several times since the Placer post office opened on its site in 1861. Its name was changed from Placer to Smithville in 1862, Pino in 1869 and finally to Loomis in 1890. Named after James Loomis— saloon keeper, railroad agent, express agent and postmaster of the town—Loomis was at one time the second largest fruit shipping station in Placer County. The town remained part of unincorporated Placer County until 1984 when it was officially incorporated. The town was once in danger of being annexed by its larger neighbor, Rocklin until residents voted to incorporate the town to preserve its unique culture and small town character.
