About Nevada City

Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada County, California and is located 60 miles northeast of Sacramento. At the 2000 census, the population was 3,001, and at the 2010 census it was 3,068. Nevada is Spanish for "snow-covered," indicating that the city was named for its snowy peaks.

Nevada City History

Formerly known as Deer Creek Dry Diggins, Nevada and Caldwell’s Upper Store, Nevada City was once the most important gold mining town in the state during the California Gold Rush that began around 1849. Considered by some to be the best preserved gold mining town in the state, Nevada City is rich in history. Set within the tall pines of northeastern California, Nevada City is home to 93 buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places as well as 18 registered landmarks. The town also contains many quaint shops, restaurants and artistic pursuits.
