Penn Valley History

The first white settlers came to Penn Valley, California when gold was discovered in the state in 1848. Believed to be the oldest settlement in Nevada County, the early settlers traded with Native Americans for supplies, offering bows, arrows and rifles in return. The area began to grow when miners gave up their pursuit for gold and began utilizing the land for agriculture. Known as the “Pantry of the Northern Mines,” Penn Valley’s fine land supplied fresh fruit, vegetables and meat to freight wagons passing through to mines in Nevada and other areas. Penn Valley also became known for its thriving dairy industry with the introduction of a creamery that became known as one of the best in the entire state. Today, not much remains of this once booming industry except for the restored Butter Maker’s Cottage in Western Gateway Park.
