Roseville is the largest city in Placer County. Located in the metropolitan area of Sacramento, Roseville’s population is around 132,700 as of 2016. Interstate 80 and State Route 65 run directly through the city. Its central location and proximity to Sacramento, San Francisco, and Reno make it the perfect place for families that want a lower cost of living and less traffic without sacrificing big city perks.
For several thousand years, Placer County was home to the indigenous Nisenan. The discovery of gold in the nearby Sierra foothills in 1849 brought a large number of prospectors into what would eventually be known as Roseville. In 1864, a track laying crew for the Central Pacific Railroad built a rail line coming from Sacramento in the West creating a junction with the existing California Central Railroad. Officially incorporated as a city in 1909, Roseville has been known by several different names including a stage coach station known as Griders, a railroad station called Junction and then finally its current name.
