After being one of northern California’s most trusted moving companies for over 75 years, we know California! If you were thinking of moving or vacationing in Truckee, here is some helpful information to learn more.
Originally named Coburn Station, Truckee is located in eastern Nevada County near the Nevada state line. Recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the town retains its historic roots by hosting quaint shops, restaurants and historic buildings. Truckee is located near the Truckee River, the only outlet of Lake Tahoe.
Truckee was named after a friendly Paiute Indian chief who assisted emigrants across the Sierra Nevada. The town eventually grew and progressed into a railroad town starting with the Transcontinental Railroad. The railroad goes into downtown Truckee and Amtrak passenger lines still stop there on the route from Chicago to San Francisco. The name “Donner” is well known around the Truckee area in reference to the Donner Party ordeal. Known as Truckee’s most historical event, the Donner Party ordeal is the story of a group of settlers from Illinois who traveled west on the Oregon Trail, but experienced many hardships and mishaps as a result of a harsh winter. Named after this group of pioneers is Donner Lake and Donner Memorial State Park located just outside of Truckee.
